Long Drive With a Finish at the End

We went to a Jewish bris today for the son of friends of ours who was just born one week ago today. We left at 10:30 this morning and didn’t get home until 8:30 tonight. 3 hours up and nearly 4 on the way home, thanks to rush hour traffic coming out of New York City (we were coming from northern New Jersey). A long and frustrating drive home, punctuated by a near accident caused by a real ***hole jerk with a massive attitude and an overactive middle finger that still has me shaking with fear and anger.

That rant will be for another day, though, because I really need to put some distance between myself and the event so that I can calm down and stop replaying it in my head.

But I did get in a finish! I took several projects with me, but ended up with another design from Periphaeria Designs, this one named Echoes of a Squared Lotus. I had already started on it last week and what can I say? They make great travel projects!

So, here it is, and I’m one project closer to allowing myself a little stash splurge. πŸ˜€

Bye-Bye 50 Projects Challenge, Hello 10 Projects Challenge

It’s official. I did it. I dumped the 50 Projects Challenge. I failed. Miserably. I had the best of intentions, but the way I’ve been treating exemptions, I obviously cannot, realistically, hold myself to this challenge.

So, say goodbye to the 50 Projects Challenge and hello to the first in a string of many 10 Projects Challenges.

I feel much better about this. It encourages me to finish projects in my stash and yet allows me to still acquire new items with minimal guilt. I am going to try to limit myself to the purchase of one new chart or kit after each successful completion of a 10 project challenge. I think that’s pretty reasonable.

I made the official start date May 1st, since I have not actually purchased any new charts since my trip to Shepherd’s Bush in Utah in March. Okay, well, I purchased a Story Keep chart from Heaven and Earth Designs the other day… But, considering the massive amounts of temptation sitting at my fingertips due to the inception of One Star’s Light, I think that I have been an awfully good girl!

I’ve had 6 finishes since May 1st, so I only have 4 more projects to go before I get a reward. Yippee! I think I’ll be able to do that sometime this month and then buy one of the charts that is calling me with its sweet, siren song. πŸ˜€

Thanks for your input!

New Model and Barnabee

Yesterday was a pretty good mail day. I received two packages of orders from the online Needlework Show (yes, I bought some new goodies to sell on One Star’s Light) that I need to enter into inventory and then advertise for sale. I also received a new model to work on for The Sweetheart Tree. I really enjoy working on her models and I have about 3 weeks to complete this one instead of the rush job that was attached to the last one.

I put in a few stitches on Barnabee last night, after writing up bills, putting together packages, discontinuing the sale on One Star’s Light and all of the other half a million things that seem to occupy my time lately. I only put in about an hour, so there’s not enough progress to even warrant a photo. Sorry. πŸ™‚ I should have a progress photo by the weekend. I kept stalling getting back into this one, but now that I’ve started, I’m enjoying it again. That’s a good sign.

Unfortunately, of all of the goodies that I’ve ordered recently for One Star’s Light, I think I’m going to buy 4 or more of them. Just when I was catching up on my 50 74 Project Challenge (I have 43 finishes). I could try and put it off a bit longer, but I don’t think I can hold out for another 31 projects! Maybe I should just stop now, declare myself to have not met failed the 50 project challenge and make the move now to 10 project challenges? That way, I could reward myself with a new chart after every 10 projects completed and not feel so guilty.

What do you think I should do?

Lovely Sunday

A little chilly, but a beautiful day, nonetheless, with blue skies and gorgeous, fluffy, white clouds. We went to visit Cathy this afternoon so that we could attend her chorale concert. Her group was excellent and I really enjoyed their repertoire. They are going to be great when they travel to Williamsburg in two weeks.

Joshua was sweet enough to sit in my lap for most of the concert and both kids were well-behaved. Evie wants to be a singer, just like her mom. She opened her program and held it up in front of her, moving her mouth along with the chorale as they sang. Too cute! Joshua has a fantastic ear and sang along at a couple of points. He also liked to direct along with the chorale director. A musical duo of wonderful children from musical parents. πŸ™‚ Cathy is always kind enough to indulge me and let me get my “kid fix” when we visit. I love playing and hanging around with (other people’s) children. And Joshua and Evie are just wonderful!

On the stitching front, I finished stitching and finished-finished two more PIF gifts this weekend, so I’m closer to wrapping up round 2 and completing my PIF commitments. It has been fun coming up with projects for my recipients and I’m kind of sorry to be close to the end. I also kitted up a Christmas ornament for my new commuter project and then started and finished a random, tiny kit on the way to Cathy’s house:

A Beautiful Day to Garden

Not too hot, mostly cloudy so that the sun wasn’t beating on me. Just right.

I started by watering my seedlings. The herbs seem to be germinating nicely and I think I’m going to have a nice planter crop of them this year. The pepper and tomato seedlings are doing very well and are ready to plant in the garden beds when I get them cleared out and tilled. The broccoli seedlings are questionable, as their stems are long but weak and don’t seem to be able to stand up on their own right now. The lone onion is… I have no idea. It’s still alive. I have a feeling that onions don’t do well from seed. I have some bulbs somewhere that I will try once the beds are tilled.

Then I tackled pruning (more like performing surgery) on our poor little cherry tree. Portions of it have died out, there are places on the trunk where the bark is splitting open and it’s generally unhappy. But it does still have more than half of its branches with foliage on and I can’t bare to lose it, so I bought some tree wound dressing the other day and decided to bite the bullet and cut off everything that’s dead. It’s now done, though it was tough for me to do, and all of the wounds have been coated, including all of the spots on the trunk. If I have to coat the entire bottom half of the trunk to save it, I will. So, it looks a little funky now (I should have taken before and after pictures), but I think that it will survive. I also pounded in two fertilizer stakes and watered it. I will try to remember to water it weekly this summer and see if I can’t get it to recover and perk up. If it does, it will put out new shoots for branches and try to rebalance itself. I have my fingers crossed and am half tempted to learn Reiki so that I can transmit some healing energy to it. What can I say? I’m a tree hugger. πŸ™‚

After that, I dug out a small evergreen bush that was dying off and moved it to another spot. Then I dug up our monstrosity (4+ feet) of a cheddar pink, divided it into two and moved it to the mulched area at the very front of our property, near the mailbox.

So, you see, I’ve been a busy girl. And now it’s time to think about some dinner and sit down for an evening/night of stitching. Last night, I stayed up very late and put away all of my threads from old projects, including overdyeds, even though it meant having to reorganize 4 out of my 6 Stitchbow holders to make room for everything. Bit I stuck it out and got it done. Now I feel better. I pulled all of the threads for Barnabee’s Quest part 2 and to start Irish Blessing Sampler to commemorate a friend’s wedding. I think that Barnabee will finally get some much-needed attention tonight. If so, I’ll post a progress photo on Monday, maybe. πŸ˜‰

I hope that everyone is having a wonderful weekend!

Kokopelli Finish

Not once, but 1 and 1/3 or so. Come on, I had to stitch something for the bottom of the biscornu, didn’t I? I ran out of floss, though, and didn’t feel like buying another skein, so I stopped with what I had.

So, without further adieu, here is Kokopelli by Periphaeria Designs, stitched on 32(?) ct. Flax linen with Dragon Floss in Woodstock:

I Have a Touch of Start-itis

What do you do when you sit down for a brief stitching session and want something easy and quick to stitch up, but don’t seem to have anything at hand? Why, kit up a new project, of course! I just couldn’t help myself, so I started another project from Peripheria Designs called Echoes of a Squared Lotus.

You have to understand, I have had cuts of fabrics and coordinating flosses sitting around with all of her first round releases since I went to Utah and took a ton of possible projects to stitch. So, I grabbed a fabric/floss combination that was soothing to the eyes and a design that was appealing to stitch and had some fun. As a result, I am now 1/3 of the way through Echoes of a Squared Lotus.

I am also closing in on a finish of Kokopelli from Periphaeria Designs, which has been my travel project for a week or so. So close, in fact, that if I don’t finish it on the ride home tonight, I will bring it inside and finish it. I should have a picture to share tomorrow!

I will try to pick and kit up an ornament for my next travel project. My main problem right now is that I do not feel like going upstairs and pulling multiple DMCs. This is what is stalling me on Barnabee’s Quest, the Summer Dragon for the RR and numerous other things that I could be working on. I think I am going to force myself to do it tonight. Which means I have to clean up the floss laying in a pile from various other finishes, as well. Put everything away and then pull what I need. Ugh. πŸ™ Hopefully, I will have the self-restraint to not just start another of Outi’s designs instead. I have 3 of them kitted up and ready to go. πŸ˜†

SBQ – Of WIPs and UFOs

TodayÒ€ℒs SBQ was suggested by Kathryn and is:

How many WIPs do you have? How many UFOs do you have? When does a WIP become a UFO?

I will go backwards in order to answer these questions. Like many others, I consider a WIP to become a UFO after a year of not working on it. WIPs and UFOs are both projects with at least one stitch in them. But, UFOs are projects that I fully intend to keep working on, I just haven’t picked them up in a while. I have one level past that which I call Shelved. This means that I am not interested in working on them right now. They will likely come back in at some point, but there was either a missed deadline associated with it, lack of interest in it, etc. I keep track of all of them here. So, let’s see now…

SBQ Ketchup

Er… catch-up. πŸ˜‰

I haven’t been keeping up with the SBQs and haven’t even been getting all of the notifications, so I had to dig into my archive and the SBQ archive to find everything.

__________

March 15th:

If you had $500 to spend on stitching-related items, what would you buy?

Now I remember why I didn’t answer this one. Bottom line is that I probably wouldn’t spend $500 on stash, even if I had it to spare. The most I’ve spent at one time is at CATS and I always set myself a budget. $300 is the highest I’ve gone. I spent it on charts and kits at The Sweetheart Tree, kits at Lorri Birmingham Designs (since she was retiring) and miscellaneous fibers, embellishments and small charts that were on sale or captured my fancy. Right now, I’m so full up on stash that I can’t even contemplate spending that much. I think CATS will be more about networking for me this year. Sandie Vanosdall is very excited to see me again. And I will be able to connect with Jo of Dinky Dyes, too, at the very least. It will be fun to meet with her as a wholesale customer this time, instead of just an avid fan.

__________

March 29th:

Do you have a system for organizing freebie charts in your stash? If so, what is it? Do you print out copies of all of the freebies that you find on the web (that you think you might actually stitch) or do you maintain electronic copies of them until you are ready to stitch them?

For a while, I was printing off all freebies and storing them in a binder. Now, I keep everything on my computer, unless it’s paper. Then it will go into the binder. The binder is organized by needlework type (cross stitch and hardanger).

__________

April 5th:

How do you decide which stitching blogs are worth repeat and/or regular viewings? Are there certain things you look for in particular? Are there things you wish there were more of? Less of? Is your blog a good example of what you like to read?

I start by trying to frequent the blogs of people who comment on mine. I like to read blogs which are fairly regularly updated. Photos are nice, but since I’m a slow stitcher myself, I don’t consider it a deal-breaker if it’s all talk. I don’t mind personal conversation, as my own blog is a personal blog, not just a stitching one. Other people’s experiences can help to enrich your own life and serve as learning opportunities, if you allow. Generally, I’m not very picky. I have a solid core group of blogs that I try to keep up on and then a bunch of others that I read, as well. It’s gotten a lot easier to keep up since I started using a feed reader. That way, I don’t have to check every blog every day. I just read the posts as they come in. Voila!

As for my blog, I like to think that it’s fairly well-balanced between personal, stitching and store topics, but I know that I’m woefully lacking in pictures. I do my best. I just hope that people don’t mind my babble!

__________

April 19th:

Are you on “The Wagon?” If so, how long have you been on and how “serious” are you about it? If not, have you considered it?

I am on the wagon. Or at least, I try really hard to be on the wagon. I’ve been on since CATS last year, I think. I was on before that, too, but climbed off for CATS. I’ve had quite a few slip-ups, though. Primarily due to Lorri Birmingham deciding to retire, so I was buying up all of the kits that I had had my eye on for years. Limited editions get me, too.

Basically, though, I like to allow myself new stash every once in a while for my hard work. But my real goal is to reduce my stash, slowly but surely. That’s why I like the project challenge. I just set too stiff of a goal for myself with my stitching speed by picking the 50 project challenge. Once I finally finish that, which could well be another year, I think I will approach it in 10 project intervals. That way I can reward myself every 10 finishes. If I decide not to, that’s my choice, but I’ll have the option. Across the board restrictions tend to chafe enough to make me slip.
