Keeping My Mind Occupied With Stitching

I have to do something to keep myself occupied right now so that my thoughts don’t wander into dark territory. Both of my wrists and both elbows are causing me pain right now due to all of the excessive time spent on the laptop during the months leading up to the completion of that huge project at work, so I can’t exactly come home and fiddle on the laptop right now without injuring myself further. So, what else can a gal do to keep busy? Why, stitch, of course! Believe it or not, it doesn’t aggravate my wrists very much and when I get some twinges, I just strap on a pair of splints and I can keep going without making things worse. I don’t claim to understand the workings of my body…

Anyway, as a result, I have more stitching to share already. I have two pieces I’ve stitched, but cannot reveal yet because they are entries into Anna’s stitching challenge, which ends on the 16th.

The first photo I can actually post is a finish-finish of Periphaeria Designs’ Kokopelli into a biscornu. I was going through my pile of finished work with my mom when they were down here the other weekend and I realized that both sides of this biscornu were stitched; all I had to do was put it together:

Next is Just Nan’s Frost on the Pumpkin. It was released first as a limited edition Whimzi that I bought at the last CATS festival in Hershey a couple of years ago. She has since released it to the general public, but I can’t find a link to it on her site. I stitched this one up in the wee hours of one morning recently when I had a bout of insomnia. The white stitches on the snowflakes look a bit wonky because I found that, for some odd reason, I didn’t have any Kreinik 032 blending filament to go over the top of the stitches, so I had to use DMC’s equivalent metallic floss. It didn’t exactly work, but it will just have to be good enough:

Then we have my rendition of the Fall Biscornu, which is the current freebie contest running on The Victoria Sampler Yahoo! group. I’m not actually entering it into the contest because the point is for Thea to have models that she can use on her website to promote the design, along with a list of the materials used for each model. Well, I stitched portions of my biscornu with unlabeled overdyed silks from a grab bag and a limited edition overdyed silk that is no longer available. Oh well, looking at the current entries, there was no way I was going to win anyway! 🙂 Thea offered 4 different possible corner designs; I chose to use the pumpkins on one side and the leaves on the other. In hindsight, the border kind-of clashes with the rest of the design. Too bad!

So, here is one side stitched up with the pumpkins design:

And the other stitched up with the leaves design:

And here is the finished product:

And finally, there is my latest finish. I completed the stitching and beading last night, along with sewing the pocket together. I just strung the beads for the chain this morning. This is from a Mill Hill Treasured Stitching Band Kit for a scissor pocket, named Mauve Heart Sampler. The white and sea glass colored beads didn’t really show up in the scan unfortunately. You can see them a little better in the larger sized scan, if you are interested:

That’s all from me for now. Off to work on a WIP that hasn’t been touched in at least 2 years. I’d like to actually finish it and frame it in time for it to become the Christmas present that it was intended to be. 😉

A General Update (Long and Photo Intensive)

Hi Folks!

Those of you who have a feed reader will probably be shocked to see an actual post on this blog. Anyone who checks manually has likely long since given up on me. 😉

I’ve had a lot going on over the past few months. The massive work project, a global software implementation that has been more than 3 years in the making, is finally complete! We’re in the stabilization phase now and, fortunately, my piece has been nice and stable, so it’s all good. I still have to work the occasional weekend because any work I have to do that requires system downtime has to be scheduled around manufacturing shifts around the world, but it’s a necessary evil and not one that is the least bit new or foreign to me. This is what I signed on for when I took on this commitment, even if I didn’t realize it at the beginning.

Michelle asked me the other day how school was going. Well, it’s not. I got through nearly all of the easy, introductory courses and was heading into the more focused classes and combining more hours of coursework and more effort with the intensification of the project at work and increased work hours just wasn’t going to pan out. Unfortunately, the Art Institute of Pittsburgh’s Online Division doesn’t allow for taking a session off or any sort of sabbatical, so I had to officially withdraw from the school. Now that things are starting to settle back down into something more closely resembling normal (what is normal, anyway?), I might re-enroll. But, to be honest, I haven’t recovered enough of myself yet to have the burning desire to go back to school again. So, for now, I’ll wait. I purchased some extra books to be able to continue to practice my drawing skills on my own, so I think that I will focus on that first and see if I can’t get some of my previous ambition back.

On a related note, I was informed pretty soon after withdrawing from school that my assignments, which I had posted in my photo gallery to share with all of you, were being stolen by students and turned in as their own work. Needless to say, I was quite disgusted. I have now watermarked my artwork albums so that it has a lesser chance of happening again. I’ve always been a strong supporter of copyright, but having my own work violated in this manner really took it to a whole new level for me. I now have a much greater appreciation for the myriad emotions felt by an artist whose work is ripped off. It’s really quite sickening. So, to all of you designers and artists out there, I have always supported your rights, but now even more so! I encourage all of you to report instances of copyright violation wherever and whenever you find them!

And now, to bring us up to the present time, Terry and I have just recently suffered the loss of our only “child” and that has really thrown us for a loop. It’s not a subject that I want to discuss further on this blog at this time, so I will save my thoughts for a tribute post to be done at a later date, when I can write from a more objective viewpoint, at a time when it will be less painful.

With that, I think you’re all caught up, so here come the photos of all of the stitching I’ve accomplished since my last update:

First up is my entry in a biscornu contest that was sponsored by The Victoria Sampler. Thea designed Summer Biscornu and then opened a contest to the members of the Victoria Sampler Yahoo! Group to have interested parties stitch, finish and submit their own color interpretation. I stitched a different colorway for the top and bottom of my entry.

The bottom was stitched on Angel Blush lugana with Dinky Dyes overdyed pearl cottons and Bucilla silk ribbon (which I don’t think is sold anymore):

The top was stitched on Lavender Bliss lugana with Leah’s overdyed pearl cottons and Bucilla silk ribbon:

And here’s the finished product:

Next up is Ornamental Treasures III – Rosebuds by Just Nan. I bought this on eBay already kitted up, so I believe it is done on the recommended fabric with the recommended beads.

Then a kit I ordered from The Stitchery some time ago. This is Wine a Bit by Sue Hillis Designs. This scan is from before I added the wine bottle charm that goes in the upper left corner:

Next we have a design called Happy Heart from Shepherd’s Bush. I picked this kit up when I visited their storefront in Ogden, Utah a couple of years ago:

The kit included the tin frame for finishing and the ribbon to use it as a necklace. I gave this as a gift to Barbara when I met her in Maine earlier this month:

Also for Barbara, I stitched another of The Victoria Sampler’s Summer Biscornu. This time, I stitched the flowers in lazy daisy stitches, instead of using the silk ribbon. One side is done in purple on blue fabric:

The other side is done in red on a sage green fabric:

And here is the finished product. I promise that while the flash makes the buttons look like they clash horribly, but they didn’t look that bad in normal light:

I didn’t tell Barbara this, but I intended the blue/purple side to be representative of me and my favorite colors and the red/sage side to be in line with her preferred earthy colors. I didn’t know what her favorites were, so I just had to take a stab in the dark. 🙂

Next on the list is the Halloween Fob by The Sweetheart Tree. I started stitching this years ago, but never finished. I had only a few stitches left to put into one side and all of the backstitching for both pieces left, so I tackled this in the car on the way up to Maine. It is stitched on 32 ct. Sand lugana (from their Classics color line) by Silkweaver:

One of the projects I stitched on the way back was this Celtic Jewel key ring kit from Textile Heritage:

I now have this one finished into its keyring, but doing so smashed the stitches mercilessly, so it looks nicer in this scan than as the finished product… oh well!

One of the pieces I started while in Maine was the Pagoda Pincushion by Lody Steward, from the July issue of The Gift of Stitching Magazine. This is stitched on Confederate Gray linen (I think) with an unidentified overdyed silk and what I thought was a matching shade of pink DMC. Neither of the scans show the colors correctly:

It came together nicely, except I stuffed it far too aggressively and practically burst it at the seams! I’ve done this on a biscornu in the past, as well. It’s patchable, but I chose the nicer of the sides for the photograph. 😉 The photo does more justice to the fabric and fiber colors:

And finally, here is the final project that I started in Maine and completed a couple of days ago. I enjoyed stitching this one, as it was like stitching a band sampler, with different specialty stitches to keep you interested. This is the Sarah Belle Scissor Case by Lorri Birmingham:

Since the bulk of the stitching is done with ecru DMC on Angel Blush lugana, the stitches don’t show up very well, but it truly was a joy to stitch and I was sorry when it ended. Even when I spent two days stitching all of those Queen stitches (which is not one of my favorite stitches) in the border. It now has its fringe, but I haven’t dared to actually finish it, as it requires a lining and I’ve never done that before. So, it will go into my huge pile of projects to be finished for some day in the future. I really need to start attacking that pile one of these days…

So, there you have it. The last 3 months of my life summarized in one long post. If you stuck with me to the end of this, then you deserve a hearty pat on the back! Thanks for reading!

Looking For Penny

Hi Folks,
I’m looking for the Penny who sent me a message early this morning via my contact page regarding some of my classwork. I tried to respond to the email address that you gave along with your message, but it bounced. I’d like to get a little bit more information from you, like the section name of your class, so that I can follow up on what happened. If you happen to see this, please email me ASAP at jenna (at) jennamagee (dot) com. Thanks!

Stitching Catchup (Long and Photo Intense)

Believe it or not, I have managed to get some stitching done while I’ve been on my blogging hiatus. First up are four princess initials that I stitched in March. The first three were for the three girls that a coworker and her husband just adopted. The fourth was for the daughter of another coworker. All four were stitched from the charts from a Dimensions kit called Princess Alphabet.

After completing these, I apparently started stitching up a small storm. Something I didn’t realize until I scanned everything in preparation for this post. So, here come the rest:

Ink Circles – Celtic Ice

JBW Designs – I Love to Shop at the Silver Needle

JBW Designs – A Very Merry Summer

Just Nan – Jingle! Biscornu (Top)

Just Nan – Jingle! Biscornu (Bottom)

Just Nan – Jingle! Tin Topper

Just Nan – Crystal Heart

Lizzie*Kate – Woof Blocks Flip-It

Just Nan – Flower Girls

Lorri Birmingham – Irish Needle Roll

And then there’s this one that I started and finished yesterday:

Lorri Birmingham – Crystal Pink Pincushion

And this one that I just finished a little bit ago today:

At this rate, there are more to come!

This Weekend Sucked, But It’s Okay

Any time you are actually happy to go in to the office on Monday because it will actually mean less work than the weekend that you just spent working… well, it’s just a bad sign.

It started with me signing in from home to work around 7 PM Friday night (yes, after putting in a full day at work). I did a bunch of things, then twiddled my thumbs until midnight, when I had to do some more things. Then I got a break until noon on Saturday, so at least I was able to get a full night’s sleep, even if it was late. Then the real fun began. Someone made a mistake, which made what should have been 15 minutes of work for me into the rest of the weekend worth of work. I was going to have to work on other things anyway, but this meant that I had to juggle a full load of work on two different systems, instead of just the one. I got less than four hours of sleep early Sunday morning.

Anyway, I survived. 🙂 And I managed to finish my final project for my last class (for now, at least) and get it turned in before heading off to bed around midnight last night. Now to strap on my boots and prepare for a very busy week. We’re going through another practice exercise at work consisting of 24×7 work for everyone on the project to go through a mock run of what will be required to bring the system online at the end of July. That means a little bit of a break for me today and then really intense and odd hours Tuesday and Wednesday.

But hey, I’m almost done with my class. Since I turned in my final project last night (two days early), I just have 3 critiques to write on Wednesday. And then I can breathe again. I’ll be so happy to just go outside for a while on Thursday. I don’t even care what the weather is going to be like, as long as I’m not in front of a computer of some sort! 😀

Thanks to all of you for continuing to read and for all of your supportive comments. I really appreciate each and everyone one of you!

She’s ALIVE!?!

Wow, has it really been 3 months to the day since I last posted here? I’ll be curious to see if I even have any readers left after that kind of absence…

So, what have I been up to, one might ask? Well, let’s see. My work has been slowly but surely creeping into my personal time and is now up to around my ears maybe? Yeah, that sounds about right. My stress level has increased at an even greater pace and has now completely enveloped my entire being. I have gone through several bouts of stress-related health incidents. I had a sudden, severe onset of restless leg syndrome that left me unable to sleep until after 6 AM on the worst nights. That persisted for several weeks and was resistant to any of the medications that multiple doctors tried. It slowly subsided on its own and is thankfully completely gone now. Right as the RLS was starting to subside, we went through a 24/7 practice run of our software go-live plan for work and I experienced 3 major migraines (requiring my maximum strength prescription to kill) in a period of a week and a half.

I very nearly lost my mind during that time. Seriously. I’m still not sure how I managed not to snap like a twig. But I came really close. I guess my little mind isn’t quite as fragile as I thought.

I am extremely grateful for my network of caring and understanding coworkers and friends who have helped me to cling to what shred of sanity I actually have left. I was pretty upfront about my health issues while they were occurring and I was given a lot of latitude around what hours of the day I worked and from where. Meaning that since I didn’t get to sleep until 6 AM, I ended up working odd hours and from home. I am lucky that my job position afforded me to do such without causing any issues. I am even more grateful for a wonderful husband who has truly been sticking by me through thick and thin. He really picked up my slack around the house and continues to do so when my work hours get particularly out of control.

So, where does that leave me right now? Well, to be honest, I’m still clinging by my fingernails to a tiny little log in a tumultuous river of stress. But the rapids haven’t pulled me under yet. And I don’t intend to let them.

I made a very difficult decision this week. After the class I’m currently taking ends in the middle of next week, I am officially withdrawing from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh Online Division for several months. This massive project at work that is eating into my personal time so heavily will be implemented by the end of July (fingers cross that the timeline doesn’t slip). Terry and I are planning to spend our 10th wedding anniversary at Walt Disney World in late September. After that, I should be good to go back to school.

I think that I made the right decision. Something had to give and I prefer that it not be my health, physical or mental. I discussed it with my husband, I discussed it with my friends, I discussed it with my family and I even called my therapist and got his opinion. I am extremely unhappy that my work load has gotten so far out of control as to force me to have to make this decision, but it’s a done deal. Or it will be, as soon as my advisor puts through the paperwork. I made sure to let several key people at work know this week that I had to drop out of school, so my point has been made. And everyone so far agrees that it stinks. But, of course, no one can do anything about it.

I just have to survive the next couple of months and then the raging flood waters that currently dictate my course in life should stop threatening to overflow their banks and subside to their normal levels.

Then I should be able to start living again, instead of merely existing.

Is anyone still reading?

The New Jennamagee.com

Check it out! jennamagee.com is totally new and redesigned.

It’s not exactly what I had envisioned, but it’s not bad. And, after hours and hours of work, it works equally well in Firefox, Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Explorer 7. At least, I hope there aren’t any bugs that I haven’t found and worked out.

Please take a look and tell me what you think. 🙂
