Happy Dancing!

I finally finished stitching all of the pieces of the Hearts and Flowers Hardanger Collection this weekend! Yippee! Now I just need to rummage through my fabrics and see if I can find something that goes well for finishing. THAT will be quite a task (the finishing part, that is)! Photos follow; please click for bigger, better pictures.

I also downloaded part 3 of the Alchemy Stitchcraft Mystery Sampler SAL and stitched it tonight:

This photo shows parts I, II and II and is a little more true to the actual colors than the previous WIP pic. The fabric I’m using is Glass Blue Monaco (which is a 28 count evenweave). The fibers I’m using are Caron Waterlilies in Moonflower, with two DMC flosses is coordinating colors, pearl cotton #8 and #12 in white and Kreinik #4 braid in #032 (pearl).

For anyone who is interested in joining (and sorry I was remiss in mentioning this earlier), the SAL can be found on the Alchemy Stitchcraft Yahoo! group. I hope that some of you will consider joining in on the fun!

Also, thank you for all of your kind comments about my neurologist visit. I am very excited and although the previous four days were a headache nightmare for me, I’m optimistic that the new medication combined with a visit to the pscyhologist on Thursday will help me get these buggers under control. I’ve done well today, so here’s hoping for more days like this one! 😀

SBQ – February 1, 2006

Sorry, just a couple of days late with this one. Renee snuck it into my inbox late Wednesday night. 😉

This week’s SBQ was inspired by Renee’s visit with Dawn and is:

With the exception of your online stitching friends, do you have any other stitching buddies?

This is so quick I can’t believe I didn’t answer it sooner. And the answer is… NO! I don’t know many people who stitch around here. If I were to hang out at the LNS, I’m sure I would meet some, but then I wouldn’t get as much stitching done, now would I? Seriously, though, this is why I joined stitching groups online, so that I could commune with other stitchers, even if only in electronic fashion. I’ve actually met some stitchers in real life, such as when I went to the Sudberry House sale last August and met up with a couple of ladies from the VSCyberstitchers Yahoo! group. It’s nice to talk to people in person, but I also enjoy doing my own thing at home and then showing off and chatting online. It works for me! 😀

Back From the Neurologist

Knowing that some of you are in different timezones and might be looking for an update, I thought I would post this sooner, rather than later.

I had a very successful visit with the neurologist today. It’s amazing how much information you can cram into 15-20 minutes. He’s a small (one doctor) practice and I really like him a lot. You may wonder why I like him so much already? Well, I have to tell you that when we were winding down the discussion and I asked him about whether or not I should continue taking the Fioricet to combat the regular headaches, his response included the phrase “it’s what I take for my migraines” and I just about fell out of my chair! I naturally have a lot of faith in someone who has actually experienced the conditions he or she is treating as a physician. It’s one of the reasons that I prefer female gynecologists because, truly, I don’t care how much formal training you’ve had, you cannot truly understand until you’ve gone through these things yourself! I have an incredible amount of respect for him as a doctor and his skills, not just from that statement, but also his knowledge of what is happening in the prescription drug market. He knows what drugs have recently been released, are being worked on, are slated for development, etc.

Overall, a very positive experience and I give him an A+. He had a good bedside manner and I felt like he asked all the right questions, or at least as many as he could in the time allotted. We went (quickly) through my entire history from when I first started getting migraines, including the symptoms I used to have, what I have now, what drugs I’ve been on, what has been tried, what hasn’t, what I’m doing now, how that’s working for me, what I could do to improve my usage of some of the drugs available to me, etc. He seemed surprised that I’ve never been put on a preventative drug for the headaches before now. He also told me (which I’ve heard before, having the benefit of side knowledge due to my mother’s 30-year struggle with migraines and depression) that whether they are full-blown migraines or seemingly “just headaches” that they are all still related and in the same cycle, particularly this close together.

Anyway, I’ve been prescribed an anti-seizure medication called Neurontin to start taking as a preventative measure. It’s his first choice because it has the least side effects. The main side effect is sedation, so general sleepiness, grogginess and dopey-ness (though how you’d know that I’m dopier than usual is beyond me 😉 ). And in his experience, it works in about 6 out of 10 patients. The first thing he told me is that there are a lot of drugs available and that it may take a little while to find the right one because you never know what is going to work on each person. I appreciate his honesty and being upfront about that. In other words, “don’t get your hopes up, we may have to travel down this road a while before we get you some relief.” I expect that and can deal with it.

He seemed unwilling to change my anti-depressant, even though I’ve been on it since I was in high school. He mentioned that Wellbutrin is a fairly old drug and that there are newer generation drugs out and being worked on that might also work for me, but he never doubles up on anti-depressants that are in the same category. Plus, since I see a near-immediate effect on my migraines when I miss a pill (I’m on a 24-hour sustained release drug and when I miss a pill, I’m pretty much guaranteed one heck of a migraine within a few days), it’s probably not worth messing with it at this time. He also mentioned that depression and migraines often go hand-in-hand. I thought I would mention that for any of you out there who might suffer from migraines, but haven’t necessarily looked at the depression end. He’s found that when he puts someone on an anti-depressant, it can have the pleasant effect of also helping to control their headaches, as well. Just some food for thought. I never thought I suffered from depression, especially when I was a teenager, but you don’t have to be suicidal or severely depressed to suffer from depression. *Steps down off of her soapbox and tucks it away under the bed for another day.*

So, we went straight to the pharmacy and had the new prescription filled so that I can start it tonight. It will take a week or so until I’m up to the full dosage, so I want to start as soon as possible. I’ll take one before bed every night for 3 days, then twice a day for 3 days, then hit the full dose of 3 a day. Of course, he said I can stretch it out a little longer if I’m finding that I feel really tired while adjusting to the new drug.

Have I mentioned how much I like this guy? I have a followup appointment in 3 weeks, but he said that the timing isn’t set in stone. I can come in sooner if I need to, I can call and talk to him on the phone if I want, he can call in something else if I need it, etc. I almost fell out of my chair again when he said that I could talk to him on the phone. That’s the first time I’ve EVER heard a doctor say that to me. Usually, if you call up and say that you want to talk to the doctor, you’re told you need to make an appointment. Just goes to show that he’s not necessarily in this for the money. And based on the number of people in the waiting room, he has no shortage of clients!

So, I’ll cross my fingers over the next week and hope for some positive results from the new drug. I’ll be keeping a regular headache diary from now on (per his instructions), for which I already have a template that I downloaded from the internet a while ago, so that I can track my progress. Usually I track it in my head, but something more formal will specifically help to see if the drug is having any effect. In the meantime, at Terry’s strong recommendation, I’m going to schedule an appointment to see the company psychologist. It’s funny that Terry is pushing me in that direction, since I did the same exact thing to him a few months ago when he was having so many problems. It’s about time that I talked to someone about the stress I’m carrying inside of me, my type A, perfectionist personality and the high level of anxiety that I seem to experience so much of the time (and have since I was a kid).

I’ll attack this problem from every angle I can! That way, the headache monster has fewer places to hide. 😈 Come out, come out, wherever you are…

January Stitching Goals in Review

So, how did I do? Pretty well, I would say! 😀

  • Complete and send back model – DONE!
  • Finish and send SBEBB Garden Exchange piece – DONE!
  • Complete stitching on SBEBB Valentine’s Exchange pieces – DONE!
  • 🙂 Work on Victoria Sampler – Heirloom Memories Sampler – Just a little bit
  • 🙁 Work on Dimensions – Bonsai and Buddha – No
  • 🙂 Start Twisted Oaks Designs – Hearts & Flowers Hardanger Collection – YES!

I also needed to work on my World Trade Center quilt panel, which I did. In fact, I was able to start and finish the panel in about a week. Plus, I stitched both of the parts released this month for the Alchemy Stitchcraft Mystery Sampler SAL and finished and sent my SBEBB Valentine’s Exchange. On top of that, I actually (re)started my Fairy Moon, finally. Good stuff!

She’s Started!!!

Of course, by “she,” I mean Mirabilia’s Fairy Moon! It was my goal to start her this month and I just barely made it. I pulled the scroll frame out last night and put it onto a lap stand, but I didn’t put in any stitches. I decided that I wanted to start with her hair and face, but I wanted to change her hair color, so I made the color changes last night, with Terry’s help. I was going to choose colors close to my own hair, but that was too boring, so I went with an auburn, with lighter red highlights. I even added copper Kreinik blending filament to the highlights to make them shimmer. I hope it doesn’t turn out to be too much! I think the new colors do go better with the fabric. The jury is still out on that one, though, so I’m asking you, my fair reader, to weigh in. It’s not the best photo in the world, but here’s a reasonable closeup.

I’m such a slow stitcher, it’s not even funny. I started stitching after dinner, a little after 7 PM. I stitched all of the highlights in her hair, but I didn’t finish the main hair color itself. I then switched to start her face, but didn’t come close to finishing that, either. It took me more than 3.5 hours to get not very far! I think this is why I don’t stitch larger pieces. *sigh* She’ll look great someday, though! I’ll try to post a photo with more accurate colors the next time I post an update. For now, these will have to do, since my camera decided to throw a fit when I put in new batteries!

Monday, Monday

I’m still not feeling hot, so don’t be surprised if you don’t hear from me much this week. I want to send a hearty thank you to all of you who have left comments for me. I don’t like to whine excessively, so I don’t want to continue to talk about my headaches. I see the neurologist on Thursday and I’ll update everyone on what happens then.

On a good note, I went to the dentist today. Yes, I’m wierd. The dentist is usually a pleasant experience for me. I like my hygienist a lot. She’s just a couple of years younger than I am and she recently (the day before our wedding anniversary) married a guy who works also works in IT at the company I work for. She’s a real sweetheart and has been working on my teeth for years. We get along really well and I work with her husband every once in a while, so we always have a good little gab while I’m in the chair. Which reminds me – I promised to send her some cookie recipes. Anyway, the news was all good. Everything looks fine. Woohoo!

No new stitching to report. I did frog the cross on Heirloom Memories Sampler, to be replaced with a heart. I’m still trying to get Terry to decide on the personalization for the sampler. I’m leaning towards his mom’s full name, plus birth and death dates. I also brought the frame with the new fabric for Fairy Moon downstairs and put it onto a lap stand. It won’t fit on the floor stand because it’s so big and heavy; it would probably tip the stand. I’d actually like to put at least one stitch in it before January ends (i.e. tomorrow). 🙂

Weekend Plans Gone Awry

I had high hopes for this weekend. Training finished well on Friday and I had a lot of fun. We beat Diablo’s butt last night and ate a lot of pizza. But I woke up this morning with pain in the right shoulder, neck and head. Took two Excedrin and laid back down. Woke up a couple of hours later, went downstairs and stitched for a while. Ate breakfast, took two Fioricets and laid down for a nap. Woke up a couple of hours later, ate some more food and stitched some more. I still have a headache and my head feels like it’s going to explode, so I think it’s about time to take the mega migraine medicine and lay down again.

Needless to say, we did not travel to see the baby today. Fortunately (or unfortunately?), Terry doesn’t feel so hot either, so it’s not all my fault that we can’t go. We’ll drive over to see them next weekend, once we’ve both recovered. In the meantime, I seem to be paying for the week of training and the excessive gaming last night. I’m glad that I’ll be seeing the neurologist on Thursday.

I probably shouldn’t have stitched today, but I get SO BORED when I have a migraine! I can’t really watch TV because it’s hard on the eyes (and the ears), I don’t want to sleep all day, I don’t think I could read for the same reason as not watching TV, so what does that leave me? Not a whole lot. So I stitched, whether my body liked it or not. I started the Alchemy Stitchcraft mystery sampler. Part II was released this morning and I hadn’t even had a chance to work on Part I during the week, so I caught up by stitching both parts today. This photo doesn’t show the colors accurately at all. It looks so much nicer in person and I’ll probably lay it on the scanner at some point to get the best representation:

Now that I’m caught up, I took that project off of the stand and put my Twisted Oaks Designs Hearts and Flowers Hardanger Collection on the stand. I’ll try to work on that tonight if I’m still bored or tomorrow when I’ll hopefully be feeling much better. Of the other two ladies with whom I was doing an informal SAL on this set of designs, one has completed all of her stitching and the other has actually finished all of the pieces into their final form. I’m waaaaaaay behind on this one and I like the designs, so I want to get moving on it.

For now, though, I’m hungry again, so I’m going to get something more to eat and then think about taking some medicine. I hope that everyone else is having a great weekend!

Happy Dance, Baby! Plus, Weekend Planning

Awwwww yeah! That’s right… I’m dancing. Go Jenna! Go Jenna! 🙂

I just finished my World Trade Center quilt panel and I’m so very excited, I can’t even tell you. It will go to the post office on Monday, along with the SBEBB Valentine Exchange gift that has been sitting in my craft room for weeks waiting to go out. With the WTC quilt, I’m happy to have been able to contribute to such an incredible effort and commemorate the lives of 18 people who died in the attacks. I’m also happy to be done with all of my obligation stitching for a little while so that I can finally get to stitching some of my own projects! WOOT! 😀

I ripped through this panel in exactly a week. I started last Thursday, spent my stitch-a-long weekend working on it and have done at least 1 name a night since. Despite being completely exhausted every night this week from the training. I’m amazed I didn’t make any huge mistakes!

Tomorrow night is computer game night at a friend’s house. We will be hunting down Diablo and giving his evil, demonic behind a sound thrashing; hopefully finishing the last act of the game (this has been an ongoing saga for 5 of us for over a year; we just don’t get together very often). Tomorrow promises to only be a half day of training, as we’ll need to let out early for those who have to catch flights home and we’re almost through all of the material on the agenda. Which means we get to come home and take a nap before sitting in front of computers all night and into the wee hours of the morning, stoked by pizza and soda (water for me, thanks) and me probably relieving my stress by yelling random obscenities at the monsters on the screen while I shoot arrows into their leathery hides. Woohoo! 😈

We came home to a message on our answering machine from good friends of ours who are going to be visiting this weekend with the mutual friends who recently had their first child, a son. So, we’ll probably be driving over there (in the new car; much better gas mileage and a little bit of show-off value if I can remember to run it through a car wash before we get there) on Saturday, after we drag our weary behinds out of bed… probably sometime after noon. I’ll take stitching and/or knitting with me in the car.

And, of course, after all of the excitement all week and on Saturday as well, we’ll most likely totally crash on Sunday. Hmmm… I’m having a premonition here… I see myself not getting out of my pajamas all day!

Oh, and by the way, all of this training has been a bit of a snore, but it has an up side. I’ve been finishing all of the labs before just about anyone else in the class, so I resorted to playing games on my cell phone this afternoon. BUT… the leader of the team has noticed how well I’ve been doing this week with the software we’re being trained on and wants to make me an official developer on the team. Of course, Terry is THE official primary developer and has been working with the stuff for years, so it’s not like I’ll hold a candle to him. But, recognition is everything in this company. The more people see of me and what I can do, the more valuable I am and the more I get paid. And this is going to be a huge, global project. Woot!

Sorry, too many woots in one post. And now that I’ve actually slowed down enough for my mind to start catching up with how tired my body is, I need to think about going to bed in a little while. *yawn*

Busy, Busy, Busy

This week has so far progressed pretty much as I expected. I get through the busy day, come home, eat and crash out on the couch. After a nap, I get up, stitch a bit and then go to bed. Repeat all week. 🙂 So, don’t be terribly surprised that you don’t hear much from me this week.

I have a headache tonight. Brought on by stress. I was pulled into an impromptu meeting after a team meeting that I missed today and the results sent my blood pressure (I assume) and stress level through the roof. Have you ever noticed that interactions with certain people always end up being stressful? I’m starting to figure things out. The more patterns that I can decipher, the more I can avoid things that trigger the headaches.

Okay, time to stitch. I got another name done on my World Trade Center quilt panel last night; 4 left. After tonight, there will probably be 3 left. At this rate, I can easily knock it out in time to mail it next week. Woot!
