Yummy!

Guess what was waiting for me when I arrived home last night? My order from Dinky-Dyes! WOOHOO! That includes the nearly the entire line of designs from The Cat’s Whiskers Design Studio. And the really exciting part of that is… because I placed a pre-order for the Nashville releases, my order was pulled from stock before the market opened. With the terrible shipping mishap that occurred, a lot of shops that went to Nashville didn’t get some of the new designs…

but I DID!

(She says as she hops up and down like a little kid.) I’m so excited to be one of a select few retailers who actually has these goodies in hand. I will tell you, though, it’s getting harder and harder to keep my paws off of the product. I was having so much fun entering the Dinky Dyes silks into inventory last night. They are gorgeous in color and texture. I could have just rolled in them. Hence the title for this post – yummy!

Next Thursday is the day that you’ll be able to get your hands on some of these goodies, as well. I’m so excited. Are you?

SAL Progress for the Week

I started on Alma Lynne’s Computer Wizard with Chiara and Zohrah on Wednesday night. I didn’t get a whole lot done due to the appearance of some serious frogs (more like brain fog). I started her hair, did half of the back of her chair and the seatcushion.

I also worked on Barnabee’s Quest again. I have to admit to cheating, though. After seeing the progress that Carol and Leslie made, I spent some time on this one on Saturday, in addition to Friday’s session. I then looked at Michelle’s and Andrea’s progress and they are going at a more leisurely pace, so I plan on slowing down some. Especially since Michelle and I will be moving on to SAL on Lady Scarlet’s Journey after we are done with Barnabee.

I also spent the weekend reworking my current store inventory and then importing it into my new accounting software package, Microsoft Office Accounting 2007. Yes, believe it or not, Microsoft had the winner. And that’s difficult for me to say, trust me, but they earned it. I’m now not only caught up to where I was in QuickBooks, but I’m completely caught up with purchase orders, item receipts and bills for all of the products that I currently have in stock.

I still have a big order coming from Dinky Dyes that should hopefully arrive this week, plus an order I mailed to The Gentle Art a week or two ago. I honestly have no idea when that one will come in. Regardless, it’s nearly time for take off and I think that I might be ready. Except for designing the graphics for the e-storefront. Whoops! I knew I was procrastinating about something. 😉

ONS Name Game HINT

The O* S* L* part of the name that you are guessing has absolutely nothing to do with stitching. 😉

Carry on.

One Flew Into the Cuckoo’s Nest

At least that’s how I felt last night at 1 AM as I was installing the trial version of the 3rd accounting software package that night. You see, QuickBooks has failed me. In a very BIG way. Thankfully, they have a 60-day guarantee, so I will be sending it back. Too bad I have at least 500 items entered into inventory already.

The snag came after I had finished entering all of the Dragon Floss items yesterday and was ready to do the accounting part of creating a purchase order, receiving the items into inventory, etc. That’s when I figured out that QuickBooks doesn’t handle multiple currencies. ARGGGGHHHHHH! *%&#@!#@^%$#*&@!*&%!!!!! Yes, all of my hard work over the past couple of weeks, setting up accounts, figuring out how the software worked and entering inventory is down the tubes.

So, last night, I started the search for a new accounting package. I downloaded PeachTree. Installed it. Tested it. WRONG! I went looking some more. I downloaded Simply Accounting. Installed it. Tested it. WRONG! Then, with Terry’s help, I downloaded Microsoft’s Office Accounting Professional 2007. After 1 AM, the trial has finally finished installing and I go to try to do the QuickBooks conversion. ERROR. I try it again. ERROR. I try something different. ERROR. Terry finally took over and never did get it to work, but he did confirm that you can assign a currency to a vendor. WOOHOO! Victory, at last.

So, I still have some testing to do, but with 2 weeks left until the grand opening, I have very little time to order a new software package, get it in, install it, configure it, setup the company file, create multiple vendors, try to import my inventory items, then recreate all of the purchase orders, invoices, bills, accounts, etc.

Just what I needed. More work. 😉

Crapspackle.

Guess My ONS Name Contest

Sparked by the comment Coral left to yesterday’s post, I have decided to have a contest to see who can accurately guess the name of my ONS. Here are the rules:

  • The contest will open immediately and will run for 2 weeks, closing on February 28th.
  • You may make up to 3 guesses. Please email your guess(es) to me at jenna (at) magees (dot) net.
  • Anyone can enter (except for the few people who already know the name, of course), only one person will win. In the event that multiple people guess correctly, the winner will be chosen at random.

Remember, the name of the store is O* S* L* Needlework Supplies (no, the number of * used is not an indication of the number of letters in the words).

The winner will receive a small stash package consisting of a chart from a new designer, plus 3 fibers specifically chosen by the designer.

Today’s Mantra is…

“The stash is for the customers!” As I was entering into inventory the items that arrived from Wichelt Imports last week and looking through the order of Dragon Floss that came in today, I found myself having to repeatedly say this mantra. It’s not easy to sort through all of these lovely threads and charts without nipping a few for myself. But no, I won’t allow it. In fact, I’m going to charge myself full retail price in order to reduce temptation.

Just 17 days left until the Grand Opening!

5 Answers – Part 4

Cathy:

  1. What makes you laugh?
  2. Terry. 🙂 He can drag a laugh out of me, even when I stubbornly try to resist. He also has one of the best, heartiest laughs that makes you smile just hearing it.

  3. What is your favorite song?
  4. I love music across many genres and I could not possibly pick just one. When it comes to classical music, Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings is my favorite piece. I find it to be very moving. My favorite pop group is Coldplay and my favorite pop artist (right now) is KT Tunstall. I like to sing along to KT Tunstall’s songs because they are mostly within my range, though her vocal range goes lower than mine.

  5. On average, how much time do you spend stitching each day?
  6. About 2 hours on weeknights, if I’m lucky. I’m throwing out the last couple of weeks because they are a significant outlier that throws off the calculation.

  7. What is your favorite sleeping position?
  8. Without a doubt, it is on my right side with my hands tucked up under the pillow and my knees bent. That’s right, the fetal position on my right side. All I’m missing is the thumb sucking. 😉

  9. Have you ever been out of the country?
  10. I answered this for Angela, but I’ll put more detail into it this time. Terry has relatives in Saint John, New Brunswick in Canada, so I have been there once and will be there again in July for Terry’s dad’s wedding. In 2000, Terry and I went with his parents on a trip to the United Kingdom. We spent a week in London (during one of their worst heatwaves ever, in a hotel with no air conditioning) and a week traveling through Scotland. I’ve seen Loch Lomond and Loch Ness. I’ve been in Inverness. We visit a textile shop where a master tartan weaver worked, the one who had developed the tartan for the Isle of Skye, I believe. I’ve seen many castles, including the one that housed the French taunters in Monty Python’s Holy Grail movie. I’ve seen brilliant greens like you have never seen before in your life and will probably never see outside of Ireland and Scotland. Since that trip, I’ve been to Scotland for work twice and we’ve been back to London several times; it’s our favorite holiday spot.

Anna: (I just had to laugh at your comment on James Lipton!)

  1. What is your favorite word?
  2. Love.

  3. What is your least favorite word?
  4. C***. It is the single most harsh and painful word in the English language, at least in my opinion. The mere pronunciation of it cuts like a knife and it should never, ever be used in reference to a woman. NEVER. In fact, I wish the word had never come into existence.

  5. What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
  6. I find that I am the most at peace and well balanced late at night or in the early morning hours, when no one else is awake and the house is quiet and still. Late nights have always been my most creative time, ever since I churned out a very long poem at 2 AM one night when I was a teenager. I don’t know why, but my mind tends to churn out things while I’m falling asleep or asleep. To the point where I have to keep a notepad beside my bed because I’ll sometimes wake up in the middle of the night with an idea for a design or a graphic or some other random idea. Spiritually, I am fueled by deep conversations with Terry and with my (step)dad. And emotionally… well, that doesn’t take much. I am a very emotional person.

  7. What turns you off?
  8. Stress. It’s a killer for anything creative, spontaneous, spiritual, sexual, etc.

  9. What is your favorite curse word?
  10. B****. It’s so overused now that it’s kind of a fun word. So and so is in full b**** mode today. That project was a total b****. Very versatile. 😆 F*** is a really good one, too. I use it very sparingly and usually when I really want to grab someone’s attention, but it sometimes slips out more when I’m stressed out and talking privately to Terry. If I use it in public, though, you know something is up.

Isabelle:

  1. What are your religious beliefs?
  2. Ahhh, what a question! People feel so strongly about religious beliefs and I’m not mainstream, so I hope that the answer to this question won’t cause people to think of me any differently or not to like me anymore. 🙁 My parents were both raised strict Roman Catholic and followed this religion through their marriage and then some. My brother was baptized but never confirmed. By the time I was born, my parents had separated from the Catholic church. My mother didn’t like the answers she received from priests when she asked about birth control and some other topics. As a result, I was raised outside of any organized religion. When I was a child, I was taught how to meditate as part of the Transcendental Meditation movement. My entire life, I have looked into different religions including Christianity, Hinduism and Buddism. I have taken learnings from each of them that resonate with me at my core and incorporated them into my spirituality. I consider myself to actually be very spiritual, just not in the traditional sense. I spend time contemplating deep issues, like life outside of this one. I tend to take a scientific approach to my spirituality, as well. I chalk that up to being such a technical person and find that other techies take a similar approach to their beliefs, as well.

  3. What inspired them?
  4. I think I answered part of this question above, but part of my beliefs have been inspired by my mother’s continuing quest to expand and grow her spiritual beliefs. This quest has spanned several decades and many different areas, which has helped me to widen my areas of thought.

It’s Time to Slow Down

We were working on the basement today. Sorting through boxes, making piles of things to go into the trash, things to go to other people and things to go into the attic. Then, we moved things up into the attic. Terry was kind enough to buy and set up some shelving units up there Thursday night in order to increase our storage capacity. Once we clean up the basement a bit, I will move all of the ONS product and materials down there, get organized and set up a staging and packaging area.

We were done moving things around for a while, but I decided to continue organizing the piles a little bit more before I quit. Because that’s just how I am. I wasn’t satisfied that my vision of clearing out that half of the basement had been achieved. Terry calls it having a bee in my behind. 😀 So, I was moving a really pretty candle stand that my grandmother bought us a year or so ago and the top came away from the bottom in my hands. I went to pick up the floral ring and find out where the base went and I found it suddenly and violently. It had a razor sharp edge that I couldn’t even see and it slashed along the side of my right forefinger and immediately started to bleed. Shocked and scared, I yelled for Terry.

Poor Terry, I think I scared him half to death. Thankfully, he knows the sound of urgency in my voice and came running right away. The amount of bright red liquid coming out of my finger was quite alarming. I was caught between staring in fascination at the interesting substance flowing out of me and being scared because this was MY blood! Of course, I was crying and I was afraid to take the pressure off of my finger long enough for Terry to get a look at the wound because I thought it would start gushing all over again.

Fortunately, the blood loss was minimal because I clamped down on it so quickly. Probably less than the vial a lab would take for blood tests. Just very frightening for me. I have a deep-seeded fear of losing a finger and no longer being able to enjoy so many of the creative activities that I love. That and the last time I cut myself (many years ago), it kept breaking back open and I ended up waiting in the hospital for hours on New Year’s Day until they could put stitches in my other forefinger.

So now, no stitching for me now and Terry’s comment on the basement was “you’re done for the day.” I’m also not sure how well I’m going to be able to work on drawing my logo tonight as I had originally planned. Oh well. I guess some downtime is being forcibly created. 🙂

5 Answers – Part 3

Jacqui:

  1. Who is your favourite cross stitch designer?
  2. At this point, I would have to say Sandie Vanosdall of The Sweetheart Tree. I love her designs, plus I have met her in person and spoken with her over the phone. She’s a very lovely person.

  3. Can you play a musical instrument?
  4. Absolutely! My mother was a professional flutist, so naturally I followed in her footsteps. I play flute and piccolo. I am lamely trying to teach myself piano, but there’s a world of difference between the flute and piano…

  5. Do you drive and if so, what make of car?
  6. Believe it or not, I can and do drive every once in a while. I even go out by myself sometimes! 😆 Terry has a control issue about driving and safety, so he usually drives if we’re together. I am the proud owner of a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid in silver. I like not having to spend quite so much on gas.

  7. What is your favourite season of the year?
  8. Autumn. It cold be because I was born in that season, but mostly it’s because there’s a slight chill in the air, so I am more comfortable (I overheat easily). Also, I love the colors of the leaves once they’ve turned and the crisp, clean smell in the air. There are more reasons, too, but I don’t want to get boring. 😉

  9. Do you own any pets?
  10. Ah yes, our beloved furbaby, Phoebe. She’s an 8-year old orange and cream colored Pomeranian who is the love of our lives. She has an entire set of albums dedicated to her in my gallery.

Coral:

  1. Are you intending giving up work when the ONS takes off?
  2. If, after a couple of years, the ONS is doing well enough, I would consider giving up my day job. I am convinced that Cathy and I will be able to open a brick and mortar shop someday. In the meantime, if I start getting swamped with orders, I would consider going part-time. Fact is, though, I really like the money I’m making right now.

  3. Do you believe most of your health problems are due to work pressure?
  4. I believe that most of my problems are due to my anxiety. That can be aggravated by any number of circumstances, not the least of which is work. It is no secret that I am not exactly where I want to be. I would like to be excited about going to work every day and to be doing work that I absolutely love with limited stressors, but I don’t know that such a beast exists. If it does, it remains an elusive and as-yet undefined species. 🙂

  5. Do you and Terry intend having any children?
  6. Hah-hah. The inevitable question to which we have an answer, but not an easy one. Nor is it a decision that we have made lightly. We have conversations about this fairly often (especially after visiting with other couples who have children), but always reach the same conclusion. The answer to that question is no, we do not intend to have any children. That answer could change someday, but every time we weigh all of the factors, it comes out the same. This tends to be a very loaded question, but the plain and simple truth is that we have chosen not to have any children.

  7. How are your relationships with your parents currently (all of them)?
  8. Fortunately, I can answer this question very positively right now. I feel very comfortable in my relationships with all three of my dads (father, step-father and father-in-law) and with my new mother-in-law-to-be and my step-mother. I still struggle in my relationship with my mother, mostly because she wants to go back to the very close bond that we had years ago but I have bonded strongly with my mate. That relationship eclipses all others. 🙂

  9. How does Terry feel about your stitching?
  10. Terry is supportive of my hobbies, unless they cause me stress. When I have been overcommitted in the past, it is no longer fun for me, nor is it an outlet for stress. When it reaches that point, he always tries to talk some sense into me, although he rarely succeeds. I have an incredibly stubborn streak, especially when it comes to commitments that I have made; just ask Cathy (re: finishing her round robin)! He tends not to buy me much stash, though, saying that I buy enough for myself. 😉

You’d Think I Was Starting a Business…

or something. I arrived home on Wednesday night to find 100 lbs worth of shipments waiting at our garage doors. Yes, I said 100 lbs. The lightest box was 13 lbs and the heaviest was over 50 lbs. 1666 sheets of blank newsprint to help fill shipping boxes is quite heavy. Plus 100 boxes and 50 or 100 cardboard pads to help keep envelopes from being bent and charts damaged in the mail. 1000 resealable bags to use for charts. 2 rolls of packing tape. And my order from Wichelt Imports.

Terry’s comment was you’d think I was starting a business or something. 😉
