Happy Thursday!

I definitely pulled out of my slump yesterday. Terry is fighting some sinus issue, so he came back to the hotel a little bit early, so we cuddled for a bit while watching TV, then went for dinner, came back, dozed off for a while, got up again, cuddled some more, then went to sleep. I guess I needed some extra sleep to get me through.

I did go down to the lobby and get some productive work done yesterday. And I’ve been productive so far today, as well, from the moment we got up. The data center was upgrading one of my production servers today at noon EDT, so I was able to jump into work sooner than I have been this week. I’ve pretty much been online since. Right now, I’m trying to decide what to do about having the room serviced. I can’t go offline yet because there was a blip with the server upgrade and it’s not completely up and running yet. I can’t disappear until that’s fixed. I was giving them until 3:00 PM home time, but the two people who can fix the problem have fallen off of the map and they are out of time. I told my users that it would only take 2 hours to upgrade and we’re on hour 3, so I’m mildly peeved. I don’t like having to rely on unreliable people. But there’s nothing that I can do about it, so there’s no point in stressing. Thank goodness for reliable friends who will kick in when I need them! πŸ˜€

I even managed to get in some good stitching the past two days. I started two new PIF gifts on Tuesday, finished one last night and just have to add beads to the other today for a finish. Ironically, I completed the over one project faster. I was just able to zone out last night while Terry took a nap and I was watching TV. I then stayed up until it was done, knowing that I was so close. I think that I will need to spend Sunday doing finishing work, if I can.

And that’s my update for now. Another bright and sunny day in Salt Lake City! I cannot believe the amount of sunshine I get through the windows here in the hotel room. It’s better than sitting in the lobby. Terry is going to finish up around 1 PM tomorrow, so we’ll have time to do some exploring. I’m still contemplating renting a car and driving out to Ogden to go to the Shepherd’s Bush store. I just haven’t made up my mind yet. I know that I will end up adding more projects to my 50/65 Project challenge because I won’t be able to hold back. Could be dangerous!

Back to work for me now, though. I hope things wrap up soon because I’m really hungry for a nice chef’s salad for lunch. Mmmmm…

I Have the Power

I had a rough day today. Just one of those down days where I didn’t manage to get out of bed until noon. I think part of it has to do with the heavy drapes in the hotel room that block out the sunlight. Good if you need to sleep during the day, but I rely on the sun to help me wake up, especially when I am depressed, so I think I may have Terry open the curtains before he leaves tomorrow morning, just in case.

It’s fascinating to me how things can quickly and easily snowball when your emotional and mental state is already somewhat fragile. I think part of it is hormonal, as well, as I am about a week away from cycling and I seem to get cranky, grumpy, weepy or whatever the week before. Add to that the fact that I did not get the 4 hours of work in yesterday that I wanted to and a message left on our answering machine at home about the electric bill that didn’t get paid before we left and I went to bed last night not feeling so great about myself. That led to being very tired in the morning and not wanting to get out of bed. Which led to full body aches, a headache and more general glumness.

But I was also able to pull myself out of it. I took a nice, hot shower, I sent a text message to Terry to have him call me on his next break so that I could attain some comfort from hearing his voice, I plotted out a course of work for myself so that I could feel like I was accomplishing something and I got a bite to eat. Now the sun is out, my aches are receding and I feel much more normal.

I am so grateful for such a caring husband and work to occupy my mind.

One Piece

Well, I made it in one piece. A little worse for wear, but it was a long day on Saturday. Our flight was delayed by two hours, most of which we spent sitting on the plane at the gate. First, they couldn’t find a pilot for the flight and then there was a problem with the left landing gear strut. We pretty much took it in stride, though, with just a few grumbles between us, but nothing like a woman two rows ahead of us who was dropping f-bombs and using all sorts of hideous language.

By the time we landed, most people had missed their connecting flights. I felt pretty bad for them, as it meant that they would be staying overnight in Salt Lake City. We finally arrived at our hotel at 11:00 PM local time (which felt like 1:00 AM to us). Terry waited in line to get us checked in, only to find that they were unable to find our reservation in their system. At this point, I was going to pass out in their lobby, whether they like it or not. πŸ˜‰ They were able to get things straightened out, though, and we finally made it up to our room.

Of course, because the flight was so delayed (and they was no meal served on the flight, just snacks), we were ravenously hungry by the time we checked in. But the kitchenwas already closed for the night. So we went to bed with no dinner. Isn’t that a form of punishment? πŸ˜†

All is well now, though. I didn’t perforate either eardrum on the flight, though portions were mildly uncomfortable. I’m still chugging antibiotics, antihistamines and Sudafed, though I’m going to try to back off on the Sudafed. I think today is the last day of antibiotics, so maybe things will go back to normal soon. The sooner I can get my energy back, the happier I will be. I was winded yesterday evening just walking a few blocks, so I would dearly love to get back to normal. My body is still on Eastern time. I have a feeling that will change just in time to leave again. πŸ˜‰

So, here I am, on a bright and beautiful Monday morning, with a high speed Internet connection that really isn’t that bad and I’m going to actually do some work. Unfortunately, the wireless access doesn’t work correctly – it keeps dumping me off and is as slow as dial-up, so I’m tethered to the desk, but I am so happy just to have access, I don’t care where I get it from!

They are experiencing an unusual heat wave here, so it is sunny, gorgeous and in the 70-80 degree range. I need to make sure that I get outside for a little bit each day and soak up the sunshine. I also want to try out their fitness area, too. So, I have a feeling that I will end up taking a few vacation days while I’m here, but I’ll just track my hours. After all, I’m all setup for work, so there is no excuse, except the wonderful world waiting right outside of my window. πŸ˜€

I hope that everyone has (had) a happy Monday!

Almost Gone

Me, not my sinus infection. At Terry’s urging, I went to the doctor yesterday to get checked out. I told her that I had to get on a plane tomorrow afternoon. She then took stats and looked in both of my ears. Her response was, “How long do we have to get you better?” So, I went to the pharmacy and came home loaded up with things to swallow, things to snort, more things to swallow and a strong desire not to perforate an eardrum on the way to Utah. The doctor said that inside my left ear looks like a big, yellow balloon. Woohoo! Terry’s comment was that from what he’s heard, at least it feels better once the eardrum bursts. Gee, thanks honey! πŸ˜†

I’ve been taking it easy the past few days, staying home from work, trying to get lots of rest. Oh yeah, I was supposed to be drinking lots of water. Shucks. I had better get on that. I woke up with a sinus headache this morning. Everything shifted to the left side a day or so ago, so that pretty much supports the doctor’s conclusion that the right side is clearing out. I took some Sudafed (you know, the good stuff that you actually have to ask the pharmacist for now *much rolling of the eyes and a few grumbles about the majority having to pay for the stupidity of a few*), some Excedrin and laid with my face on a heating pad for a little while and the pain went away. I was sorely tempted to call the doctor’s office this morning and ask for her to phone in some knock-out pills so that I could just be passed out through the whole flight. Somehow, I didn’t think that would go over well. πŸ˜‰

I am resigned to my fate, whatever it may be, but I would certainly appreciate some healing thoughts, if you have any to spare. I never used to have sinus problems before a year ago. Phooey!

On the weather front, ice has been spitting out of the sky all day, with no end in sight. Airlines have already cancelled flights, so we’ll be keeping a wary eye on Delta’s website for the next 24 hours before we leave for the airport. I probably won’t check in again until sometime Monday. We’ll be packing up and leaving for Terry’s dad’s tonight, provided the roads are passable, then going to the airport about this time tomorrow and skiing all day on Sunday (hopefully).

I wish I could take Phoebe with me. It would be so comforting to have her in the hotel with me during the day while Terry’s gone. πŸ™‚ But I’m taking work, a couple of books, some drawing materials, a Gameboy and lots of stitching with me, so if I end up bored, it will be my own fault. Heehee!

Well, the dryer just stopped and I’m still thinking of things to be packed, so I should go. Besides, now might be a good time for a nap!

YEOUCH!

Diagnosis: sinusitis migrainus ouchus πŸ™

I have a whole new respect for shop owners. It’s hard to run a business with a migraine. I pushed through it anyway and then had to take the medicine that mandates sleepy time.

I stayed home all day and tried to soothe my pain by fondling my stash and buying a few threads from myself. The Belle Soie silks from Crescent Colours are really luscious and I just couldn’t hold out anymore. πŸ™‚

Last night, we bought Terry some clothes for his conference and new luggage. The funny thing is that, for once, buying something actually made me happy. I had fun playing with my new suitcase and packing it. Sounds silly, but it’s true. I also had fun picking some fibers tonight. Yummy… πŸ™‚

Picture-less Stitching

I stitched a good portion of the weekend, in between endless loads of laundry, but I have no pictures to show for it. Partially because some of the stitching was for PIF gifts and partially because I was too lazy to go get the camera.

I finished Part I of Barnabee’s Quest, rolled it up into the scroll frame and started the border on Part II. If I’m feeling motivated when I get home tonight, I might unroll Part I and snap a photo. It depends on how late we get home, as Terry needs new clothes and the impending trip to Utah pretty much necessitates that he stop procrastinating and go shopping.

I was ready to put together one PIF gift when I realized that I had stitched the two parts on two different counts of fabric. ARGH! That was mildly off-putting. I haven’t really touched it too much since pulling a new piece of fabric with the correct count and making a small start. It was looking really nice, right up until I figured out that I had blown it. πŸ˜†

I have to make some decisions on what projects to take with me next week. I don’t like to travel with projects on frames or even QSnaps, so that rules out quite a number of projects, though I might take the 6″ QSnaps with me. I’m worried about lack of space in my suitcase, as well, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. I think the reuse of some clothing will be in order.

Okay, I’m just rambling now. I’ll try to get at least one picture to post this week, to liven things up a little. πŸ™‚

Really Good Rant Comments

I just had to write and acknowledge two ladies who left really good comments to my little egocentric hissy fit from the other day. Both Terri and Trish took the time to make really good points and I hope that you will take a minute to read both of them.

To summarize, though, Terri and Trish both pointed out the other side of the coin. Imagine if you were the customer whose order was bumped back another day. You wouldn’t be a happy camper, either. And Terri went on to say that she probably would not return to a shop if she found out that they did that, just because another customer called and just had to have their order sooner. Trish made the really good observation that I’ve known about this trip long enough to have been able to place the order earlier, so it really does become a case where lack of preparedness on my part should not become an emergency on anyone else’s. That one really hit home because usually I am a lot better organized. I know when I read a comment and it feels like I just took a sucker punch to the gut that someone has struck gold. πŸ˜‰

Well stated, both of you! Thanks again for taking the time to give me other ways of looking at the situation. The funny thing is that I used to think I was pretty good at putting myself in the other guy’s shoes, but I really missed the boat on this one because I was too wrapped up in my own selfishness. Whew! What a humbling learning experience. πŸ™‚

Short Customer Service Rant

I’m sorry, but I’m mildly cranked and I just have to rant. I feel like I’m allowed to now, especially, because I’m a shop owner myself.

I called a to-remain-unnamed needlework shop this afternoon in search of a pair of the airline-approved Dovo round-tip scissors. This is important because I NEED to be able to stitch on the 5 hour flight to Salt Lake City. No ifs, ands or buts. And I would seriously prefer not to run the risk of an over-zealous TSA employee deciding to confiscate my scissors, even if their own website says that sharp pointed scissors under 4″ in length are allowed.

So, anyway, I call and ask if they have them in stock. She politely puts me on hold and goes to check. She comes back and says that yes, they have them in stock. GREAT! 1 point to them. Then I ask her if it would be at all possible to get them out tomorrow via Priority Mail because I need them right away. This is where it gets dicey. She hesitates, so I kindly mention that I’m aware that their shipping department is a bit backed up right now, but I am leaving for a trip next Saturday and really need to have these so that I can take them on the plane. She says that they are backed up one week on order shipments. ONE WEEK! Holy cow! I would move heaven and earth to keep that from happening, if at all possible. But, she says that she will bump me ahead of a few other orders and see what they can do.

So, here I sit, with a $28 pair of Dovo scissors ordered that I may or may not get in time. Do you think that I am a satisfied customer? Um… no.

And here is where I proudly get to proclaim – NOT IN MY SHOP! I’m sorry, I know that they might be in a tough spot if they are that far behind in orders, but if I had gotten that phone call, my response would have been something like this:
“Yes, we have those in stock. I will make sure that they are packaged up and go out with tomorrow’s orders. Using Priority Mail, they should arrive sometime next week before you leave. If, for some reason, they do not arrive in time, please call me once you’re back in town to discuss whether you want to keep them or return them. But, I will do my best to get them to you next week.”

End of discussion. No excuses about how backed up the shipping department is or how difficult it might be. Just do it. If I were that woman, I would have personally picked up the package of scissors, walked them back to shipping and ask for them to be packaged up right that minute. Because, really, if you are that far behind with your orders, is anyone going to notice if their package arrives one day later? And with a package that small, how much impact would it truly have?

But that’s just me…

Needless to say, had I had any other options of places to order these, I would have started elsewhere. Gosh, I can’t wait until I have the money to be able to order stuff like that for One Star’s Light. I will try my absolute best to NEVER leave a customer hanging like that. I can either do it or I can’t.

SBQ Catch-Up

January 24th:

What company produces your favorite hand-dyed fabric? Are there any companies whose hand-dyed fabric you do not like? If so, why?

I mostly use Silkweaver, but that’s mainly due to familiarity. I have also ordered some small cuts from Sugar Maple, I believe was the company name. I find that I don’t use hand-dyed fabric terribly often. I tend to reach for standard,neutral-colored fabrics first, unless I stop and make a conscious effort to use special fabric.

—————
February 7th:

Have you ever been to a stitching retreat?

No. I’ve nearly gone to 2 or 3, but I was unable to justify the cost.

—————
February 14th:

Do you like to buy Ò€œchartpacksÒ€ that include charms, buttons, and/or beads or do you prefer to gather all materials yourself?

Yes, I do. I have trouble gathering specialty items and sometimes it is overkill to buy a full packet of beads when you only use a dozen or so. I think that The Sweetheart Tree does a really good job with their embellishment packs, as does Just Nan and The Victoria Sampler.

—————
February 21st:

What is the smallest count fabric you have ever used? Did you stitch over one? Conversely, what is the largest count fabric you have ever used?

The smallest fabric that I have used to date is 36 ct linen. I would like to use 40 ct at some point and I have a cut of it, just need to find a good project for it. The largest count fabric that I have used is 11 ct Aida. I had to use this for a panel for the Flight 93 quilt and I really didn’t care for it. I had to use 3 strands, I think, to get better coverage. I think that the highest count that I’ve stitched on over one is 32 ct.

—————
February 28th:

Do you find yourself stitching faster when you are getting to the end of a design?

I don’t stitch quickly. Period. However, like others have noted, I do tend to focus more time on a piece when I am reaching the end.

—————
March 7th:

Do you use your needle, a seam ripper, or something else when you have to frog stitches? Why do you use the method that you do?

Definitely a needle. I would not want to harm the fabric at all. If I have to use scissors, I will pick the thread up off of the fabric with the needle first. Good, sharp seam rippers I would never use because the chance is much greater that you could easily slip and cut more threads than intended and/or cut the fabric. Besides, I’m a clutz. πŸ˜›

Canvas Question

Okay, I have never worked with canvas, but I now own two quick pillow kits done on painted canvas and I would like to start one, but I don’t know where to start. I’m assuming that I need to stretch the canvas somehow? I have no idea how to do this or what to buy to do it, but I’ll be going past a Michael’s tomorrow night on the way home from my Dr. Steve appointment, so if I get an answer before 5 PM, that would be great!

So, what do I need? Stretcher bars? If the design is 16 x 16 inches, how big of stretcher bars do I need? 16.5″ square? I assume that they are wooden? And I need tacks to tack the canvas to the wood? Sorry for the newbie questions, but, well… I’m a newbie. πŸ˜‰
